Overview

Located at the heart of Melbourne's bustling Chinatown, BlackBall ChinaTown offers a refreshing escape into the world of traditional and innovative desserts. This dessert restaurant specializes in Taiwanese-inspired treats that emphasize authentic textures and balanced flavors. Its signature items, such as the Blackball Crushed Ice and Milk Tea Hot Pot, highlight a thoughtful commitment to unique, delicate textures and varied taste experiences.

The shaved ice creations stand out visually and texturally. Unlike typical icy desserts, BlackBall’s offerings feature finely shaved ribbons of ice that melt smoothly on the palate, delivering a highly enjoyable mouthfeel. However, some find the flavors subtle, leaning toward mild sweetness, which can either be seen as a gentle finish or slightly underwhelming depending on personal preference.

For those seeking richness with a hint of nostalgia, the Black Glutinous Waffle and Banana Chocolate Waffles bring a warm, fragrant comfort. The mochi waffles, in particular, garner strong praise for their chewy centers paired with crisp exteriors, topped beautifully with ice cream. These dishes strike an excellent balance between texture and taste — fragrant, satisfying, yet not overly sweet.

BlackBall also excels with its more playful offerings, like the Mini Dessert Box. This selection allows patrons to sample a variety of flavors and textures in one neatly presented set — perfect for sharing on a casual date or with friends. The little jiggly jelly shaped like a rabbit adds a touch of whimsy, enhancing the overall inviting and lighthearted atmosphere.

The restaurant’s design is cozy and intimate, ideal for those looking to unwind after a long day with a sophisticated sweet treat. It welcomes dessert enthusiasts who appreciate subtle sweetness and refined presentation over a loud flavor profile. The staff's attentiveness and the approachable price point make it an accessible choice for locals and visitors alike.

Overall, BlackBall ChinaTown is a notable destination for dessert lovers who value authenticity, texture, and variety. While the delicate nature of its flavors may not suit every palate, the inventive menu offers a rich palette of traditional Taiwanese desserts reimagined for Melbourne’s vibrant food scene.

I finally got the chance to try this place out after passing by it so many times and I love it!! I tried the milk tea hot pot and mochi qflles, which were both very good. Both of them not too sweet which I absolutely enjoyed. But the mochi qffles were definitely the star of the show. The waffles were very fragrant, served with chewy mochi in between them, and topped with ice cream. It was very delicious and affordable as well!!

Absolutely adorable and delicious! We had the Mini Dessert Box, and each little dish was unique and tasty, from the soft puddings to the fluffy waffles and that super cute animal-shaped dessert in the center. The portion was perfect for two people to share without feeling too full. Beautifully presented and a fun way to try a variety of flavours in one go. Highly recommend for a cute dessert date or treat with a friend!

You won't find this remarkable texture anywhere else in Melbourne, however it falls short by being extremely tasteless. I tried two flavours, the milk tea, and the melon. In both instances, both barely resembled the flavour they were meant to replicate, and with barely any sweetness to pair with it, it results in a bland icy experience. It's a shame, as the texture of the shaved ice in the form of delicate shaved ribbons makes it a standout compared to the many other locations in the city, and personally is much more pleasant, but with no taste to pair with it, it's hard to justify a reason to come back.

???????????????????????????????????? ⭑.ᐟ ︎ ????????????????-????????????????????: First-time sweet escape in Melbourne ︎ ???????????? ????????????????: Double Choco Ice Cream Croffle ︎ ???????????????? ????????????: Dessert lovers, choco fans, casual treats ︎ ????????????????: Playful, cheerful, cozy corner with cute decor ꫂ ၴႅၴ It was my very first visit to Melbourne, and while walking around exploring, I passed by BlackBall and couldn’t resist the cheerful dessert shop with its cute interior. I instantly walked in and decided to try the Double Choco Ice Cream Croffle. The dessert came out looking super tempting—layers of soft waffle stacked with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream, all drizzled with rich chocolate sauce. It was indulgent and sweet in all the right ways. The croffle itself wasn’t as crunchy as I expected—it leaned more to the soft side—but flavor-wise it was still good and satisfying. The ice cream melted just enough to blend with the sauce and waffle, creating a sweet bite every time. The whole place had this fun vibe with adorable wall art, making it such a chill spot to enjoy dessert after a long walk. Honestly, now I’m curious to come back and try their mini desserts and especially the dessert hotpot, which sounds both fun and cozy. This little find made my first day in Melbourne extra sweet. ⴵ ???????????????? ????????????????: Quick service around 8 mins ???? ????????????????????: Not too busy, peaceful atmosphere ???????????? ????????????????????????????: Monday evening ‎???? ????????????????????: Double Choco Ice Cream Croffle ???????????????????? ???? ????????????????????????? We ordered the milk tea hotpot. It tastes really good and might be heavy for one person to finish. Choose hot instead of iced might be better. The taro balls and sweet potato balls were delicious. The caramel pudding was a bit sweet. Customer services was awesome and the desserts were ready very soon after we ordered. Overall great experience, but doesn’t mean another visit of the shop.
